Young people and the many things they do right under your nose - Sammie.

Looking back at my teenage years, there are many things I know my folks would cringe at if they ever found out. But at the same time, I see some of my friends and I cringe at the things they were (and still are) into, so all things being equal I think I'm alright!

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that there are a lot of things young people get into that their parents/guardians are unaware of or simply turn a blind eye to.  It’s probably common knowledge that most young people, teenagers (both old and young), are sexually active.  I mean, if they aren't having regular sex, they’re probably having oral sex or phone sex or masturbating or watching porn.  FYI, this isn't only a "guy” thing, evenyoung girls watch porn and masturbate.

Most parents want to believe their kids are too good for that, or they want to believe they have too many controls in place, but young kids are creative.  They'll find a way around all those controls if they really want to.
Another obvious one is, young people are good at lying and pretending.  They are pros at it!  If they really want to go somewhere, they’ll tell you what you want to hear. Even get their friends to corroborate the story so they can go see Mr. X or Miss Y, or so they can go to a party. Sometimes it's not even that they want to do anything wrong, they just want to hang out and have fun.

People usually think, the parents’ home is the least likely place for "things" to happen.  In reality, it isn't.  As long as there are periods of time when the house is empty, any and everything can happen.  Again it's one of those situations where young people just bring out the creative parts of their brains and plan everything just right.

Substance abuse. Drugs and the likes.  Young folks get involved in this for reasons that I cannot even understand.  It's usually a means to an end and again, there’s a lot of creativity that goes into planning the how, when and where.  It's sad, but it's a thing that happens underneath the noses of a lot of people without them being aware.

Sadly, this brings me to abortions.  Believe it or not, the number of abortions that get performed in bathrooms or by "friends” is just appalling.  However when a young girl gets knocked up and she has parents who are overly strict,  the easier,  but more risky,  options is to abort the child before the parents can find out.
Now, I’m not here to paint young people as evil, because most young people are actually amazing. However these things do happen. As a parent/guardian, you may not be able to stop them from happening, but you can create an environment that gives you an awareness of what they are doing. A little less strictness and a little more openness goes a long way in getting younger people to open up. Why should you do this? Because when they can open up, they’ll be more willing to tell you some of the things they do, which, granted,  may not make you feel good, but at least you would know (p.s. living in denial really isn’t ideal here). Also, when they feel they can trust you, chances are, if they get into trouble, they might come to you first instead of the friends that got them into that mess.

It probably sounds very far-fetched and unrealistic, but as someone living in the west, I have seen first-hand that these relationships do happen and they have benefits too!
